Plain answers about portable restrooms in New York

Most questions come down to four things: what the city expects at a street event, which unit to ask for, what changes for construction and film, and how a quote is built. Short version: register the event, say if food is served, ask for hand-wash stations and accessible units, and get the price confirmed.

Topic 1

Events and permits

Do I need portable toilets for a block party?

If food is served at a permitted street event, the city's event guide says sponsors must provide portable chemical toilets and hand-washing sinks. For a gathering without food, ask the Street Activity Permit Office or NYC Parks what applies to your event.

Who do I contact to register a street event?

The Street Activity Permit Office, at 100 Gold Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10038. Permitting is overseen by the Mayor's Office of Citywide Event Coordination and Management, which publishes a Comprehensive Event Permitting Guide. The toilet provider does not issue permits.

Is there a rule for how many toilets an event needs?

The sources behind this site found no New York rule giving units per attendee, so none is stated here. A provider can suggest a number from crowd size, duration and food service, and the permit office can say if it expects a particular figure.

What about food vendors at my event?

The sponsor submits a vendor list to the health department at least 30 days ahead, and each food unit needs a Temporary Food Service Establishment permit. NYC Health Code Article 88 calls for toilets and hand-wash sinks at those events, so say that on the call.

Topic 2

Units and options

What is an ADA unit?

An accessible portable toilet is larger than a standard unit and built to be used by people who use mobility aids. Providers price them separately. Public events normally need at least one, and the provider can say what it has available.

When is a hand-wash station enough on its own?

A hand-wash station is for washing, not for toileting, so it goes beside toilets rather than replacing them. At food events the city's guide asks for hand-washing sinks with hot and cold running water, so ask the provider whether the station you are quoted meets that.

Can I move or empty a unit myself?

No. Providers service and move their own units, and nothing on this site tells you to do it yourself. If a unit is full, damaged or leaning, call the provider and let it handle the fix.

Do units cope with New York winters?

Ask the provider. Snow and cold change how servicing works, and Central Park took 11.4 inches in January 2026. The cold-weather page explains what to ask about, and early booking helps when snow is forecast.

Topic 3

Construction, film and long jobs

How many toilets does a New York construction site need?

Under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51, one toilet for 20 or fewer workers, then one seat and one urinal per 40 workers for 20 or more, and per 50 for 200 or more. Toilets in unsanitary condition do not count toward those minimums, so servicing matters.

Does a tall building change the answer?

It can. New York State Industrial Code Rule 23-1.9 sets limits on distance and height from a worker to a toilet, no more than 500 feet of travel on the same level and never over 1,000 feet. Put units where workers can actually reach them.

Can I get units for a film shoot?

Yes, film and TV shoots are a regular use. Say how many days, what the location is and whether the crew parks and works in one spot, and the provider will say what it can place. Permit rules for a location come from the city, not from the line.

Is a long rental billed differently?

Often. Listings show lower weekly figures for 28-day rentals than for single weeks, but your provider sets the price. Ask what servicing frequency is built in and what happens if the job runs longer than planned.

Topic 4

Quotes and the line

Will you tell me the price on the phone?

No. The line connects you with a provider, and the provider quotes. Charges depend on unit type, number, duration, servicing, delivery access and options like accessible units and hand-wash stations. Ask for the price for your dates before you book.

Do you serve New Jersey?

Yes: Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne, Newark, East Rutherford and Harrison are in the service area. The sources behind this site have no New Jersey event-permit sanitation rules, so check with the town before your event.

Can I get same-day delivery?

Sometimes, when a provider has units free, but it is never promised on the call. Delivery time and availability for a given date are the provider's to confirm.

What if I am not sure what I need?

Call and describe the day, the place and the crowd. The provider can propose unit types and servicing, and you can weigh that against what the permit office or your site manager expects.
